SAS

Alphabet, Federated claim SAS interoperability for 3.5 GHz band destined for 5G

Spectrum Access System (SAS) | Federated Wireless

5G NR Pilot test

SK Telecom, Ericsson, Qualcomm to conduct joint 5G NR trial | ZDNet

SK telecom and Ericsson conduct field trials for 5G New Radio.

Ericsson has already unveiled 5G New Radio system. 5G NR specification is not frozen, but partially. That system "AIR 6468" has capability for upgrading 5G NR system. SK will use it. Because it is important for such a operators to rollout the elastic 5G system which is upgradable to 3GPP based.

Why should SK conduct field trial even though 5G is not frozen? Because SK have to launch 5G commercial service by Pyongyang Winter Olympic Game. So SK want to accumulate knowledge of the 5G New Radio. Otherwise, using LTE radio access technology may be the alternative in early 5G commercial service.

In 5G, mobile network operator should accumulate knowledge of not only mm/cm radio wave propagation but also radio technology such as New Radio. For rolling out 5G system, mobile operator should try to solve many problems.

NFV trial

Cloud and NFV core to Nokia trial with Vodafone on 5G transition

Massive MIMO

SoftBank sees massive MIMO as key part of its 5G project

SoftBank says that massive MIMO is the key element of 5G. It is true on the view on radio propagation. But 5G has a lot of parts for its architecture. So it is difficult to say for us what is the key part of 5G.

Massive MIMO is one of the important thing. If we can not achieve the high performance of massive MIMO, we will lose the high throughput and high capacity. It means that the costs per bit will higher. All mobile network operator must cut the costs for network operation and provide the reasonable price, so they should achieve high performance with fewer base stations.

To integrate the Massive MIMO, the vendors try to development and evaluate it. But, is the mobile operator need to try it? Using massive MIMO, should the mobile operator change the technics how to deployment base stations and antennas. I don't know whether it is or not.

On the view that, Softbank say that massive MIMO is the key part. It is important things for mobile network operator to know whether does massive MIMO make mobile network operator's view on the area planning or not.

China Mobile の規模

China Mobile to launch 5G trials next year

with the telco looking to roll out nearly 10,000 5G base stations by 2020.

The carrier expects to add 100,000 LTE base stations this year.

The carrier is said to initially focus on sub-6 GHz spectrum, with a view to eventually begin testing higher frequency bands.

5G broadband services to be challenged by mm wave spectrum limitations

5G may use 28GHz spectrum band for one of commercial service. The advantage of 28GHz is that we can get a very wide spectrum band to achieve the very high speed peak rate. But, one of the disadvantages is that we can not expect for the propagation, especially indoor penetration.

How to keep the wireless coverage in the traditional cellular network? Mobile network operators deploy macro/small base station and such a base stations provide indoor coverage by the penetration. In case it can not, mobile network operators build indoor-cells.

In 5G era, we can not do such a construction because the cont will be very high. So we need to think alternative plan how to provide 5G coverage.

One of the answers is FWA. FWA needs not to guarantee the widely coverage, because houses never move. Verizon, which is a mobile operator in North America, will hurry up to provide FWA service via 5G. But, as this article says, it will not be the motivation to roll out the 5G commercial service.

FWA is not popular solution. For example, WiMAX (IEEE802.16) did not become a popular, and Mobile WiMAX also disappeared (Mobile WiMAX2 became TD-LTE).

Some mobile operator say, "5G can create widely coverage area." Is it really? If we can, We will be able to provide 4"G like service." But if we can not, the application need to be drastically changed. We do not know what application which we provide because the network feature is unknown. And We do not not know how to construct the 5G network because how feature will the future application have. It is Chicken-Egg problem.
